Abstract
This paper describes an extension to a computationally fast and simple procedure that produces an index of support for the diagnosis of diseases. The extension allows the specification of fuzzy symptoms by using fuzzy relations to determine a symptom's strength based on observed intensity and certainty of duration. We begin by briefly considering the context of use of the process and then go on to formally describe the fuzzy approach and the algorithm that produces the improved index. Finally, we show how the improved index values relate to two confusable diseases given a range of symptom strengths.
