Abstract
The importance of the Japanese economy has been studied extensively, yet no equivalent literature has arisen to measure the aggregate environmental consequences of Japanese economic activity. Geographers are uniquely positioned to draw on the physical and human aspects of the discipline to offer assessments of environmental impact of society over time. A new tool for such studies is presented. The ecological footprint concept provides an integrated measure of the habitat or space used to support the lifestyle of a particular society using current technology. The goods and services demanded by society are converted into the cropland, pasture, aquatic area, forests, energy lands and degraded lands used to support the associated lifestyle. This innovative approach is used to assess the environmental consequences of the Japanese economic activity over the 1961-95 period. The Japanese economy quadrupled in size while the associated ecological footprint nearly doubled to over 6 hectares of productive habitat per person by the mid 1990s. Great improvements were achieved by some technologies, but overall, the pattern is one of increased demands placed on the environment.
