Abstract

The textures of swaged and of recrystallized wires of titanium of three purity levels (zone refined, commercial A-50, and commercial A-70) were investigated. The texture of the cold-worked state of all three materials is a strong 〈101̄0〉 fiber texture. For grain sizes less than about 3 μm the recrystallized texture is the same as that in the as-swaged condition. For larger grain sizes, the 〈101̄0〉 direction rotates ± 15 degrees from the wire axis in all three materials. In the case of the zone-refined material a similar rotation occurs for the basal plane with respect to the wire axis; however, this does not occur for the less-pure A-50 and A-70 materials. Some possible reasons for this effect of purity are discussed.
