Abstract
The climatic suitability of wine grape classes in Europe was mapped using a latitude- temperature index. It was found necessary to superimpose a constraint based on a minimum temperature of the coldest month of —3°C to exclude those areas where winters are too severe for vine survival. The index, combined with this constraint, proved a useful indicator of current climatic potential of wine grapes. A sensitivity analysis, using arbitrary adjustments to temperature, suggested that even a 1°C warming could lead to a significant expansion in potential of viticulture. More critical examination, using GCM projections of global warming, and more site or region specific studies are recommended.
