Abstract
According to W. M. Wheeler, Lasius niger alienus var. americanus is the most widespread ant and the most abundant insect we have. It is commonly called the cornfield ant, and rightfully so, but it is also found in lawns, along sidewalks, in fields, and in woods, in great abundance. It has been observed that these ants will congregate in large numbers in certain areas and several problems have arisen concerning the nature of such aggregations.
