Abstract
The Lancet Maternal Health series is largely uncontroversial: there is unanimity about the need for more investment, political commitment, and research to reduce the unacceptable annual burden of half a million maternal deaths. There is also no doubt that a delivery attended by a skilled attendant in a health facility should be a woman's right if that is her choice. However, the final paper of the series goes further: "The Millennium Development Goal for maternal health (MDG-5)—to reduce maternal mortality by two-thirds by 2015—will best be achieved by adopting a core strategy of health centre-based intrapartum care (HCIC)."
