TL;DR

Evidence supports the theory that repeated exercise “conditions” the stress adaptation mechanism and the ability to adjust to stress is helped through an increased sensitivity of the adrenal glands and less adjustment necessary because of a more efficient mechanism resulting from an exercise program.

Abstract

Abstract This article presents research studies concerning the effects of exercise upon the adrenal glands and the autonomic nervous system. The evidence supports the theory that repeated exercise “conditions” the stress adaptation mechanism. The ability to adjust to stress is helped through an increased sensitivity of the adrenal glands and less adjustment necessary because of a more efficient mechanism resulting from an exercise program.
