Abstract The definition, purpose, and theoretical bases of seclusion are discussed. Incidence figures and possible factors influencing the use of seclusion are reviewed. Ideas for intervention before a crisis are presented, as well as some possible outcomes for both patients and staff. Finally, some specific, practical guidelines for using seclusion are offered. The author does not advocate the use of seclusion, but rather its therapeutic implementation when it is necessary.
