Abstract
Many Americans are inactive or irregularly active during their leisure time. Rates of inactivity are greater for women, older persons, non-Hispanic blacks, and Mexican Americans. Intervention strategies meant to promote lifetime physical activities among all Americans represents a major health priority.

4,055 Citations1993Barbara E. Ainsworth, William L. Haskell +5 more
A coding scheme is presented for classifying physical activity by rate of energy expenditure, i.e., by intensity, and general use of this coding system would enhance the comparability of results across studies using self reports of physical activity.
HypertensionPrevalence of Hypertension in the US Adult Population
2,997 Citations1995Vicki L. Burt, Paul K. Whelton +6 more
awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension have improved substantially since the 1976-1980 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey but continue to be suboptimal, especially in Mexican Americans.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

2,387 Citations1994Robert J. Kuczmarski
Observed trends in overweight prevalence and body mass index of the US adult population suggest that the Healthy People 2000 objective of reducing the prevalence of overweight US adults to no more than 20% may not be met by the year 2000.

JAMADeclining Serum Total Cholesterol Levels Among US Adults
458 Citations1993Clifford L. Johnson
The observed downward trend in serum cholesterol levels has coincided with a continuing decline in coronary heart disease mortality, suggesting that the Healthy People 2000 goal of reducing the mean serum cholesterol level of US adults to no more than 200 mg/dL (5.17 mmol/L) is attainable.

419 Citations1993Bess H. Marcus, Laurey R. Simkin
Understanding the stages of exercise behavior could yield important information for enhancing rates of participation in physical activity in the study of exercise.

Mortality is only one aspect of public health burdens that would be reduced by greater participation in regular physical activity, and quality of life, which has not been attempted, would also improve.
