Abstract
There have been few attempts to explain the neural mechanisms underlying the artistic experience. In a recent issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies entirely devoted to addressing how the brain responds to art, Ramachandran and Hirstein put forward a theory of artistic experience comprising eight neural principles derived from evolutionary biology. In a lively Perspective, [Christopher Tyler][1] analyzes the eight principles and how they can be applied throughout the history of art. [1]: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/285/5428/673
