Abstract
The need for a balance in addressing cultural differences and similarities in the diagnostic assessment and treatment of black children is the major focus of this article. Selected illustrations from the literature and from the author's professional experiences point out some of the pitfalls, as well as steps to take that will promote accuracy in diagnosis and effective treatment. Several identified reference points are viewed to be of considerable significance in our multicultural society, and are advocated as warranting attention in the psychiatric care of any child.
