Evolution of tourism in the Scottish highlands

Abstract

The evolution of the tourist industry of the Scottish highlands is discussed from the early eighteenth century until the beginning of the nineteenth century. Five stages of development are identified, which reflect the social, economic and technological changes occuring in Britain during those periods. The importance of fashion and taste and transportation improvements are given special emphasis. The early pattern of development of infrastructure structure and land use has significantly influenced the present characteristics of the tourist industry in the area. On présente une revue de l'industrie du tourisme dans la Haute Écosse, allant de la période au début du dix-huitième siécle jusqu'au commencement du dix-neuvième. Cinq stages de développement sont identifiés, reflétant les changements sociaux, économiques et techniques de l'importance de trios facteurs dans cette évolution, notamment la mode, les goûts ou préférences des gens, et le système de transport. Les développements antériurs de l'infrastructure, ainsi que l'utilisation du terrain dans le passé, ont influencé d'une façon significative les caractéristiques contemporaines de l'industrie du tourisme dans cette region.
