Abstract
Developmental examinations carried out on 82 young babies in a clinic in the United States showed advanced motor performances in the prone position in contrast to relatively poor performance in the supine position. These observations are described and it is suggested that the differences noted are due to the practice of placing the babies in the prone position to sleep, as was done by 80 per cent of the mothers. The significance of these observations is discussed.
