Abstract
Abstract The paper addressed to supervisors of ethnographic research is intended to be a contribution to debates on the training of qualitative researchers. It is argued that research training in the ethnographic tradition should include a critical awareness of the tasks of writing ethnographic accounts. Both the novice and the experienced researcher need to acquaint themselves with the range of available literary and rhetorical conventions. They need to inculcate an understanding of the analytic implications of alternative textual devices.
