Abstract

In the present work environment, traditional jobs are giving way to flexible, temporary and task-based contractual relationships. Economic conditions explain some of the shift away from customary patterns of employment. Other important factors arise from changes in labor market institutions. A historical and theoretical context provides insights into trends in employment and their potential consequences for managers.
