Abstract
Abstract Wegener et al. extended the investigation of the anchoring phenomenon to include the manipulation of cognitive load and several traditional factors in persuasion such as source credibility. To this breadth strategy might be added approaches that focus more on depth. By depth is meant an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of anchoring and the forces driving those mechanisms.

Social SciencesDecision Sciences
ScienceJudgment under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases
28,003 Citations1974Amos Tversky, Daniel Kahneman
Three heuristics that are employed in making judgements under uncertainty are described: representativeness, availability of instances or scenarios, which is often employed when people are asked to assess the frequency of a class or the plausibility of a particular development.

Organizational Behavior and Human PerformanceComparison of Bayesian and regression approaches to the study of information processing in judgment
1,841 Citations1971Paul Slovic, Sarah Lichtenstein
This work examines the models that have been developed for describing and prescribing the use of information in decision making, the major experimental paradigms, and the major empirical results and conclusions of these two approaches.
Psychological SciencePutting Adjustment Back in the Anchoring and Adjustment Heuristic: Differential Processing of Self-Generated and Experimenter-Provided Anchors
710 Citations2001Nicholas Epley, Thomas Gilovich
Evidence is presented that insufficient adjustment produces anchoring effects when the anchors are self-generated, and it is suggested it is time to reintroduce anchoring and adjustment as an explanation for some judgments under uncertainty.
Organizational Behavior and Human Decision ProcessesAnchoring, Activation, and the Construction of Values
588 Citations1999Gretchen B. Chapman, Eric J. Johnson
This work suggests that anchors affect judgments by increasing the availability and construction of features that the anchor and target hold in common and reducing the availability of features of the target that differ from the anchor.

424 Citations1999Viswanath Venkatesh, Cheri Speier
Investigation of the effect of mood on employee motivation and intentions toward using a specific computer technology at two points in time indicated that there were only short-term boosts in intrinsic motivation and intention to use the technology among individuals in the positive mood intervention.

Journal of Personality and Social PsychologyThe Redux of Cognitive Consistency Theories: Evidence Judgments by Constraint Satisfaction.
287 Citations2004Dan Simon, Chadwick J. Snow +1 more
The authors suggest that decisions made from multiple pieces of evidence are performed through mechanisms of parallel constraint satisfaction, which are related to cognitive consistency theories, which should play a greater role in the understanding of human reasoning and decision making.

Two methods, the nonconscious priming of each goal and assessing the ambient activation levels of multiple goals, reveal that the goal of consistency drives information distortion.
