Fiberglass resin for determining nest architecture of ground nesting bees.

Abstract

A new mydid fly, Nemomydas hooki, n. sp. is described and illustrated from specimens collected in Bastrop and Bexar Counties, Texas. A holotype male, 10 paratype males and 2 paratype females are designated. This species is most similar to N. solitarius (Johnson), and the characteristics for their separation are summarized. The existing taxonomic key to the group is modified to include the new species. Ecological notes on the habitat of this species is also presented. The Nearctic and Neotropical mydid genus Nemomydas at present includes 17 species (Kondratieff and Welch, 1990; Steyskal, 1956). Through the kindness of Allan W. Hook, St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas, 4 males of Nemomydas representing a new species was made available to us for description. Later 7 males and 2 females was forwarded by Edward G. Riley from Texas AM face brown, setae long, erect, yellow; orbital margin of compound eye yellow pollinose; antennae 3.58-3.75 mm long, scape and pedicel brown, flagellomeres 3-4 black, flagellomere 4 distally silvery pollinose; pro boscis black apically, brown basally, short, 0.70-0.85 mm, as long as subcranial cavity. Scutum dull black to brown, with a pair of submedian yellow pollinose stripes converging posteriorly and a pair of lateral yellow pollinose stripes; setae short, erect, yellow; scutellum yellow pollinose, posteriorly outlined shiny black; postnotum yellow pollinose; wings hyaline, longitudinal veins brown, costa black with setae black; halter brown; legs blackish brown, setae black distally and long, yellow ventrally, dorsal spines black. Abdominal tergite 1 black anteriorly, yellow posteriorly, tergites 2-3 brown with yellow posterior transverse band; setae on tergite 1 yellow, long, erect, laterally, black, sparse, recum bent, dorsally; tergites 4-7 brown with yellow posterior transverse band; setae on tergite 2 yellow, long, erect, laterally, setae black, recumbent, dorsally; setae on 3-7 tergites black, dense, short, recum bent; bulla brown, margined with black; sternite 1 yellow, setae yellow and black, short, erect, sparse; sternite 2 yellow, setae black, short, sparse; sternites 3-7 brown, setae black, short, recumbent and dense.
