The effect of pavement material on road lighting performance

Abstract

The recommended design method for road lighting in the UK uses data for characterising the reflection properties of road surfaces (BS5489-1:2003) called the representative British road surface (C2), which is modified for concrete roads. A reduced reflection coefficient table, an r-table, is used to give the reflection properties of a road surface. This gives the distribution of two metrics: Q0 (a metric of the diffuse reflection) and S1 (a metric of specular reflection). Research was conducted to investigate the applicability of the C2 design method to new pavement materials including porous asphalt. The effects of using the r-tables for the new and established materials rather than the representative British road surface on the capital cost, energy cost and life cycle cost of the road lighting were considered. It was shown that C2 surfaces overestimated the average road surface luminances produced for both new and established pavement materials. Using r-tables better matched to the reflection properties of pavement materials increased costs. Six actions were recommended.
