The disseminated or progressive primary form has a fatality rate of more than 50% and requires vigorous, if not heroic, treatment (1). Although amphotericin B is relatively toxic, it has become recognized as the most effective antifungal agent for this disorder. The occurrence of transient azotemia has been reported repeatedly with amphotericin B. However, with relatively low dosages, permanent renal damage has not been reported generally.
