The environmental consequences of declining destinations

Abstract

A number of resorts in the northern hemisphere are experiencing declining tourism numbers as a consequence of both changing market demand and also the inability to supply a product desired by the late twentieth century holiday taker. This paper examines the environnmental consequences of declining visitor numbers in terms of townscape, accommodation and transport. The paper goes on to examine the possible strategic options for these resorts in terms of addressing environmental decline and examines a number of selected strategies, in an attempt to elicit common trends and approaches.
