Abstract
Day sleep of shift workers has been studied with polygraphic techniques by several research groups (1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 13). The comparison between day sleep after a night shift and night sleep after a day shift has produced a number of results, which seem to be generally accepted. These are: a general similarity in the sequence of sleep stages in both conditions (1, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13), a shortened sleep latency (1, 3, 7, 11) and a shortened REM latency (2, 13) in day sleep, no reduction of slow wave sleep after a night shift (2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, 13).
