Abstract
Retinal rod outer segments contain a light-activated cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase. Transducin, a multisubunit protein, is the amplified signal carrier in this activation process. A photolyzed rhodopsin molecule triggers the exchange of GTP for GDP in hundreds of molecules of transducin. GTP-transducin then switches on the phosphodiesterase. Amplifiers like transducin may be present in many kinds of cells, as exemplified by the G-protein in the hormone-stimulated adenylate cyclase system.
