TL;DR

It is shown that despite the high energy cost associated with computer manufacturing, the typical desktop computer is used only a fraction of its expected time, which could amortize the energy required to build a computer.

This paper discusses energy consumed by a typical desktop computer. We show that despite the high energy cost associated with computer manufacturing, the typical desktop computer is used only a fraction of its expected time. Increasing PC lifetime by reuse could amortize the energy required to build a computer.
