Abstract
This paper describes a prototype simulation model of urban residential mobility and work trip commuting. This model is formulated at as disaggregate a level as is operationally feasible. It assumes a known initial system state, defined in terms of observed spatial distributions of households, housing, etc, and then simulates the evolution of these spatial distributions over time as the outcome of stochastic processes associated with household evolution and mobility. The model is predicated on a view of urban systems as being inherently in a dynamic state of incremental adjustment to a range of internal and external forces, rather than on any explicit concept of equilibrium (a).
