Abstract
Central Respiratory ControllerThe respiratory controller, located within the CNS, is composed of two functionally and anatomically separate elements. Voluntary respiration is governed primarily by the cortex, and automatic respiration by structures within the brain-stem. The spinal cord functions to integrate the output of these two subsystems. Early studies employed the technics of destruction and gross electrical stimulation of various neural structures to determine the role of these elements in the neural regulation of respiration. Recent studies, involving application of neurophysiologic and histologic technics, have led to much new information concerning the function and organization of the brain-stem in respiration . . .
