Abstract
Despite rapid recent advances in knowledge of the anatomy of the striatum, and the disruption of behavior produced by damage to it, its functions are still poorly understood, with some investigators proposing motor (Marsden, 1980), and others cognitive functions (Divac and Oberg, 1979; Oberg and Divac, 1979). To investigate its function, recordings are being made from single neurons in different regions of the striatum during the types of behavior known to be disrupted by striatal damage, as reviewed in this paper.
