Abstract There are few studies on the hunting and gathering economy of the Australian Aborigines which can compete with this book in terms of sheer detail and depth of observation. (One that may come close is by H. Reim, Die Insektennahrung der australischen Ureinwohner, Berlin, Akademie, 1962; but owing to the language barrier it has not received wide attention.) Based on a combination of meticulously applied quantitative methods and painstaking participant observation, Altman's book must take the prize for thoroughness and volume of empirical information on a modern hunting and gathering economy.
