Abstract
Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1990, Vol 35(1), 16-17. Reviews the book, The Development of Scientific Thinking Skills by Deanna Kuhn, Eric Amsel, Michael O'Loughlin, Leona Schauble, Bonnie Leadbeater, and William Yotive (see record 1988-97454-000). This book addresses one component of scientific thinking: the relation of evidence and theory. The authors have conducted a series of experiments to examine how children and adults change their theories in light of new data. The data-driven perspective on the process of scientific thinking that is taken by the authors is consistent with their argument that scientific thinking involves general processes that are not influenced by views in any particular field of inquiry. This volume raises many intriguing questions about the nature of scientific reasoning and will be of interest to researchers and students studying thinking in any domain.
