The Atlas of Apartheid

Abstract

This work presents an analysis of spatial segregation in South Africa since the National Party came to power in 1948. Written at the end of the apartheid era, it provides an overview of the effects of apartheid on South African society. The atlas describes the legislation and impact of apartheid and the resistance, both local and international, to its racial policies. The integration of detailed maps and text reinforces the specifically spatial nature of apartheid, and demonstrates the way in which the map of South Africa was redrawn and continues to be redrawn.
