Abstract
Videotapes of psychotherapy supervision of psychiatric residents were analyzed along eight dimensions. Analysis reveals four distinct supervisory styles: 1. The facilitative supervisor assumes a consultative role; 2. The confrontative and directive supervisor is interpretive about the psychotherapeutic process; 3. The expert supervisor exerts considerable control over direction of the session; and 4. The task-oriented supervisor takes a "business-like" stance and tends to deal only with what is presented by the resident. In general, the supervisors consistently utilize one of these four styles. An increased awareness of style can enhance supervisory effectiveness.
