Abstract

The effects of environmental heterogeneity on models of prey-predator systems are investigated. Refuge behaviour is found in a continuous gradually varying environment. In this situation we do not necessarily get oscillating population cycles. The stabilizing effect observed depends on environmental variation and is not produced by diffusion alone. Our conclusions are fairly independent of the details of the model.
