Abstract

Research into respiratory muscle fatigue and failure has centered around three issues: the factors that place individuals at risk for fatigue; the physiologic manifestations of fatigue development; and the various treatment alternatives available to prevent and respond to respiratory muscle failure. Selected studies in this field of investigation are discussed, and applications to clinical practice are proposed.
