Abstract
Abstract Following a short survey of the findings and new directions of research into children's use of television, the basic assumptions of the writers’ approach are described. The aim of our project is to achieve a better understanding of what media really mean for children, in order to design and justify educational measures. In our view media utilisation by children consists in gaining meaning actively, and interacts in a complex and multifactorial way with other individual and social forces and influences. This view of the research situation requires an open and interactive methodological approach. To elucidate this approach, a study of the effects of cable TV on children's and adolescents’ media use is described.
