Abstract
Reflections on current trends in leisure shopping and their meaning for the tourism industry are only speculative because few empirical data are available to support the insights. Nevertheless the recent boom of initiatives to develop and promote shopping as a tourist product provides an incentive to examine the product mix of shopping tourism, since this is assumed to be a major activity in the future leisure scenario. Shopping tourism is also seen as a vehicle to revitalize traditional urban centres, deteriorating resorts and even rural areas. Competition in the tourism market between the different settings for leisure shopping is a key issue.
