Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to develop a general theory based on a review of the current literature concerning the relationship between income distribution and life expectancy around the world. It takes into account differences among countries as well as those within countries. The authors develop a theory that accommodates both the absolute deprivation (poverty) and relative deprivation (inequality) perspectives. Policy implications are also discussed. (ANNOTATION)
