Abstract
is issue of The Annuls of Thoracic Surgery contains 6 papers on coronary artery surgery, all presented at the 1972 meeting of The T Society of Thoracic Surgeons. At the recent annual meeting of the American Heart Association, cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons conducted a panel discussion in which great concern was expressed about the "overenthusiastic acceptance" of operative therapy of coronary artery disease.Caution was urged, and the need for controlled clinical trials was emphasized.

New England Journal of MedicineAn Evaluation of Internal-Mammary-Artery Ligation by a Double-Blind Technic
528 Citations1959Leonard A. Cobb, George I. Thomas +3 more
This procedure does not afford protection to dogs after ligation of the internal mammary arteries, and definitely increased coronary flow after bilateral internal-mammary-artery ligation has not been shown.
The American Journal of CardiologyComparison of internal mammary artery ligation and sham operation for angina pectoris∗
315 Citations1960E. Grey Dimond, C. Frederick Kittle +1 more
A sham operation was compared to ligation of the internal mammary arteries in patients with angina pectoris; patient improvement was identical and the exercise electrocardiogram was not altered.
The Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCurrent Concepts in Coronary Artery Surgery
96 Citations1972George J. Reul, G. C. Morris +3 more
A standard surgical approach for the treatment of coronary artery disease has resulted from review of clinical experience gained by performing aorta-to-coronary artery bypass grafts on 1,287 patients over the past four years.

New England Journal of MedicineA Cooperative Double-Blind Evaluation of Gastric Freezing in the Treatment of Duodenal Ulcer
75 Citations1969Julian M. Ruffin, James E. Grizzle +4 more
A double-blind evaluation of gastric "freezing" in the treatment of duodenal ulcer was initiated in 1963 and conducted simultaneously in five institutions, finding that one group of patients had the benefit of freezing while another group had the opposite effect.
The Annals of Thoracic SurgeryAttrition Rate of Aorta-to-Coronary Artery Saphenous Vein Grafts After One Year
74 Citations1972Claude M. Grondin, Yves Castonguay +4 more
Following this study, several changes were made in surgical technique which should contribute to a lower late failure rate in aorta-to-coronary artery saphenous vein grafts.
New England Journal of MedicineA Controlled Trial of Prophylactic Portacaval-Shunt Surgery
71 Citations1964Arthur J. Garceau, Robert M. Donaldson +4 more
Patients with cirrhosis and varices often die after esophageal hemorrhage, and in a retrospective analysis of the records of 106 patients appearing in the years 1918-1938 only 30 per cent survived for more than five years.
The Annals of Thoracic SurgeryLate Results of Saphenous Vein Bypass Grafting for Myocardial Revascularization
44 Citations1972Robert J. Flemma, Warren D. Johnson +6 more
There is an early saphenous vein closure rate of 9% and studies on the effect of trauma, vascularity, and nutrition of vein grafts are necessary to set the coronary vein bypass procedure on a firm footing in the treatment of coronary artery disease.
PubMedEmergency surgical treatment of bleeding peptic ulcer: an analysis of the published data on 21,130 patients.
11 Citations1971Chalmers Tc, Sebestyen Cs +1 more
The purpose of this review is to examine critically the basis of decisions for and against surgery as an emergency procedure, and to draw what conclusions can be drawn from the available data.
