Abstract

The question transcribed below occurred in an interview with an artist in New York. It will be used to explore in-depth interviewing as a science of subjective experience. By science I mean a systematic method of constructing knowledge and reporting the phenomena studied. By subjective experience I mean a sub? ject's lived experience. The question asks whether the paintings seen were as much fun to do or as freely done as they look like they were. The question's reply, also explored be? low, unfolds in a long stretch of talk as a story about coming to have fun doing art. Stories are a common conversational form and an indigenous feature of the production of knowledge in in-depth interviews. Since the reply unfolds as a story, it will not be separated from its evolving meanings and changing aspects. Other exchanges about making paintings also will be presented. These ex? changes continue to explore the experience of making art. The transcript records something very close to what I said. It is unedited: false starts, hesitations and hesitation forms appear.
