Abstract
Summary. Various types of experiments were carried out on monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ), the results of which show that spinal motoneurones innervating fore limb muscles are monospaptically activated by descending volleys in corticospinal fibres belonging to the largest pyramidal neurones originating in the contralateral precentral area.

It is shown that removal of Area 4 of the cerebral cortex in monkeys leaves intact a considerable proportion of fibers in the medullary pyramid, and that consequently the origin of the pyramidal fibers must be more widespread.
