Abstract
Sixteen role-played situations requiring assertive responding were administered to 46 female psychiatric patients. Responses to these situations were videotaped while two physiological measures (heart rate, finger pulse volume) were monitored concurrently. One half of the situations involved the expression of positive assertion; the other half the expression of negative assertion. In one half of the situations the response was directed to a female partner; in the other half to a male partner. Analysis of behavioral and physiological data tend to support a "stimulus-specific" conception of assertiveness, confirming the work of Eisler et al. (1975).
