Abstract

Four primary trends that can be recognized as important to the expansion of rural tourism are identified: the trend away from traditional resort destinations; new rural tourism market opportunities; enabling technology; and acceptance of tourism in rural change. Implications for the future are discussed, including: competition will increase, provision will grow; more national and provincial/regional rural tourism policies; partnership building; the market will grow; marketing will become more effective and sophisticated; product development; training; real estate issues; development around heritage; and more sustainable tourism policies.
