Abstract
This paper suggests that driver turnover can be reduced by directing attention to other parts of the company. Additionally, this can lead to improved overall corporate performance. One such effective change can involve the way in which dispatchers' job performance is evaluated. Performance appraisal, when properly done, is an invaluable activity. Not only can it lead to better job performance, but it also can directly increase profitability when integrated with the overall objectives of the carrier. Accurately evaluating job performance, as opposed to evaluating psychological traits, is a good way to motivate employees to achieve goals that the company values. In the trucking industry, performance appraisal can help achieve a goal shared by most firms: reduction in driver turnover.
