Abstract
The second stereotaxic atlas of Professor Talairach and his co-workers makes a major contribution to clinical neuro-anatomical identification. Detailed correlations of anatomical landmarks with pneumoencephalographic and angiographically determinable structures contribute a significant new dimension in precise identification of cortical and subcortical structures. By establishing these new criteria, the authors have closed the chapter on a decade of controversy regarding the accuracy of stereotaxic landmarks. It has been conceded that due to inherent variations in the human brain, morphologic identification of relatively constant diencephalic landmarks and structures is difficult if not impossible. In this context problems of telencephalic localization might be unsurmountable; nevertheless, an exhaustive analysis of over a hundred carefully prepared brains with more than four hundred selected angiograms and pneumoencephalograms provides a sound base for further study by anatomists and radiologists as well as physiologists and surgeons involved in stereotaxic surgery.
