Abstract

This paper presents a research methodology for developing a teaching effectiveness rating instrument based on dimensions of teaching effectiveness believed important by faculty, administrators, and students, or any combination of these groups. The methodology includes the following steps: (1) Development of an item pool; (2) Screening of the item pool; (3) Survey assessment of the screened items for importance and for student ability to rate; (4) Response analysis; and (5) Development of the evaluation instrument options. An instrument devised with this process is presently in use in the School of Business Administration, San Diego State University.
