Rats were observed in an elevated Y maze for 3 min on each of 4 successive days, and scored for movement between sections of the maze (entries) and for time spent looking over the edge (observing). Entries and observing for males, and observing for females first decreased and then increased with successive days. Entries for females remained constant. The lack of agreement between the two measures raises difficulties about experiments with elevated mazes in which entries alone have been scored in testing theories of exploration.
