Abstract
We investigate the stationary states of one-dimensional driven diffusive\nsystems, coupled to boundary reservoirs with fixed particle densities. We argue\nthat the generic phase diagram is governed by an extremal principle for the\nmacroscopic current irrespective of the local dynamics. In particular, we\npredict a minimal current phase for systems with local minimum in the\ncurrent--density relation. This phase is explained by a dynamical phenomenon,\nthe branching and coalescence of shocks, Monte-Carlo simulations confirm the\ntheoretical scenario.\n

The kinetics of biopolymerization on nucleic acid templates is discussed and the model introduced allows for the simultaneous synthesis of several chains, of a given type, on a common template, e.g., the polyribosome situation.

Steady states of driven lattice gases with open boundaries are investigated, and two types of phase transitions involving nonanalytic changes in the density profiles and the particles number fluctuation spectra are encountered upon varying the feeding rate and the particle interactions.

This model describes single-lane traffic flow on a ring and generalizes the asymmetric exclusion process models and calculates the so-called fundamental diagrams (flow vs. density) for parallel dynamics by means of an improved mean-field approximation.

297 Citations1969Carolyn T. MacDonald, Julian H. Gibbs
The kinetics of biosynthesis of polypeptides on polyribosomes is analyzed in accordance with a simple mathematical model and solutions are sought, for the probability, nj(t), that a template possesses, at time t, apolypeptide chain that has reached degree of polymerization j.
