Race and ethnicity in leisure studies.

Abstract

This chapter examines how the growing diversity of the US population is reflected in current research. Two trends are identified: little attention has been given to changes in the ethnic composition of the population, and current research has overlooked emerging theoretical perspectives in race and ethnic relations. The current research agenda in leisure and recreation studies reinforces the impression that the US is a society of white and black, and that African Americans and other ethnic and racial minorities must identify with and participate in the same activities as whites to achieve cultural assimilation.
