Abstract

A double-blind study, on the effects of naloxone (1.2 mg; 3 cm3; i.v.) and of placebo (9% NaCl serum, 3 cm3; i.v.) on the components of the ventilatory response and on heart rate, was undertaken in normal awake human subjects. Neither naloxone nor placebo produced significant changes in the parameters studied; moreover, there was no significant difference between the results obtained with naloxone and those with placebo. These data are discussed in relation to the regulation of the endogenous morphine-like systems, in normal and pathological subjects.
