Abstract

The early American sociologists wrote unabashedly about social pathology and the action lay in social reform. Indeed it was not uncommon for sociologists at the turn of the century to be actively engaged in reform movements, often with only a secondhand acquaintance with ideas concerning that which they would reform. Some were among the severest critics of the established order and a few lost their jobs to their principles.
