Abstract

In Lake v. Cameron, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia applied the principle of the “least restrictive alternative” to involuntary commitment of the mentally ill. e U.S. Supreme Court has not endorsed this requirement, but most jurisdictions now require the state to consider alternatives before seeking involuntary hospitalization.
