1. The pathways of the non-specific thalamo-cortical projection system, in the cat, are independent of the specific thalamic nuclei and the striatum. 2. The non-specific pathways pass forward to the oral pole of the thalamus where there is a topographical organization, with the ventro-medial portion related to anterior and the dorso-lateral portion to posterior cortical responses. 3. The final neurons in this multi-synaptic thalamic pathway probably lie in the nucleus reticularis and pass in a topographical manner through the internal capsule directly to various cortical areas. 4. Transcortical transmission was not found to be an important factor in the distribution of non-specific thalamo-cortical responses.
